The annual Kinkaid Week is the highlight of the year for many Upper Schoolers. With decorations adorning campus, the typical homework and assessment horrors find respite in students’ minds. Like Kinkaid Week, most public schools have a “spirit week” where students are able to dress to a different theme each day. Unlike the “Barbeque Dad and Soccer Mom,” “Adam Sandler” or “Halloween Costume,” the School’s Spirit Week looks a little different. The Review Online ranks the different themes the School offers to Upper School students.
4. Kinkaid shirt
There is nothing special about wearing a T-shirt with a few graphic designs. It’s like wearing another uniform on an out-of-uniform day except it’s supposed to be “fun.” While all the other theme days center around self-expression, the Kinkaid Shirt offers no chance for creativity. Let’s be real, it’s not even a theme — it’s just a shirt.
3. Camo
For some people, dressing in military green may be one of the best options. They would go all out with matching boots, shorts, and hats (only when outside of course). But for others, Camo Day is just a day to don a bland green T-shirt. This is a theme that can go either way. Even though dressing in all camouflage doesn’t really have anything to do with Kinkaid Week, it is still better than wearing the Kinkaid shirt.
2. Red and black
Nothing screams “school spirit” like bleeding red and black. The last theme of the week finishes close to the top of our ranking. While it is a quintessential theme, it borders on being repetitive. Students bring out their best red and black Mavericks spirit, hoping to bring home a win against Kinkaid later that day. Students are able to keep their red and black on the whole day, bringing it directly to the stands in Rice Stadium where a sea of Mavericks cheer on our football team.
1. Dress like Kinkaid
With only four options, Kinkaid week leaves little room for favorites. But its purple boas and country club outfits almost make up for the rest of the week (besides the fact that it’s only for seniors). Yes, the one day that students can go above and beyond is limited to one-fourth of the Upper School body. But that aside, ‘Dress like Kinkaid Day’ is a monumental passage for any seniors. On the other side of town, Kinkaid seniors don suspenders, taped up glasses and hold the stereotypical St. John’s essential, a Ti-84 Calculator. This day is at the top of our short list because it displays the friendly rivalry between the schools in a light-hearted comical way. It’s a 10/10 from the Review.
From the prized Dress like Kinkaid Day to the tolerated Kinkaid Shirt Day, Kinkaid week provides a way for students to have fun. After all, we’ve just reached the mid-semester mark! Everyone needs a little excitement at this point. Even if you aren’t going full-out, just being in the atmosphere of Kinkaid week makes the school days less tedious. Whether you like the theme or not, it’s there for you and your friends to enjoy and savor before returning to the reality of being a diligent student.
