For the first time in 44 years, Class Eight students did not embark on the annual Big Bend trip. From Feb. 20-26, 123 eighth graders would have camped near the international border between the United States and Mexico, if not for the pandemic.

Because the government stayed open after a 35-day-long shutdown, the Class of 2023's Big Bend trip will take place.
Due to the government shutdown, which began on Dec. 22, there are currently no visitor services provided in Big Bend National Park, which would impede the annual eighth grade retreat. Above, last year's eighth graders navigate down a trail in the park.
